The Benefits of Bellows shaft couplingTraditional types and styles of shaft couplings have their own advantages, but bellows shaft coupling yield further benefits, torsional and other, contributing to a longevity of bearing systems that are otherwise subject to quicker wear. First of all, bellows shaft coupling have an exceptionally high torsional stiffness, with respect to the given diameter(s). They therefore service transmission and other applications by delivering an optimum of peak torque and peak reversing torque. Next, because they have the highest torsional stiffness, bellows shaft coupling have a low radial resistance factor—22,000 ounce-inches per radian. That is, they keep radial bearing loads acceptably low (from 0.6 to 0.75) while still providing quick, manageable shaft-clamping that gives substantial support and positive engagement of parts. Also, bellows shaft coupling stand up to perpetual/constant velocity. At speeds up to 10,000 rpm's, these couplings can still rotate and at the same time these two-piece plastic couplings or one-piece stainless steel couplings can withstand required angling and/or can accommodate misaligned angling +/- 2 degrees in the plastic and up to 10 degrees in the stainless steel. In addition, bellows shaft coupling are have the lowest transmission error and are corrosion-resistant. And with the new plastic molded couplings this characteristic—along with the material used—makes for fewer bearings needed for shaft support and makes for less frequent replacement requirements, as well. Likewise, the cost, weight, and complexity of the system are all minimized. Too, bellows shaft coupling can be matched to fit any bore size(s). While traditional miniature couplings have a more limited range, these couplings can accommodate and meet motion-control requisites. They contribute, then, to a wider range of performance—based, in some cases, on the number of beams—and to the excellence of overall performance of technical applications/operations. As with many torsional applications, shaft couplings have been imperative and functioning quite well for over a hundred years, but the bellows shaft coupling have added benefits, bringing increasing versatility, longevity, accuracy, and reliability to the most demanding of systems, making for cost-effective and timely productivity and usage.
